SHOWCASE
This page includes a collection of some of my work as I have progressed through my career as a graduate assistant coach with Michigan State Football. I have included some of the work that we do to prepare for each opponent, as well as a few reports we do to evaluate our own offense. My job is to give as much information as possible for the coaches to create a successful plan of attack each week.
OPPONENT SCOUTING REPORTS
It is my job, as a graduate assistant, to give our coaching staff as much information as possible for each opponent. These are some of the reports I prepare each week to help our staff build a successful gameplan.
SUMMARY SHEET
For each opponent, we put together a summary sheet. This is a brief overview of the opposing team. It lists their top fronts, blitzes, stunts, and coverages. It also lists their top players at each position. This summary sheet is not very in-depth, but is a good introduction of the opponent and is a good place to start introducing the opposing team.
DOWN & DISTANCE TENDENCIES
This chart displays the opponent tendencies based on the down and distance and the offensive personnel. These are the two pieces of information a defensive coordinator has when calling a play, so it is helpful to know the most likely call a defense will make. This chart displays the defense's blitz percentage, most common fronts, percent of man vs zone coverage, and the top coverage that they have called in our breakdown. This chart helps the offensive coordinator know when they are most likely to get a favorable look for the plays they want to call.
FORMATION TENDENCIES
Defenses often make adjustments to their play call based on the formation that the offense lines up in. This chart lists the top defensive fronts, coverages, and blitzes based on the offensive formation. It has third downs separate, as most defenses have a different third down gameplan. This helps the offense know what looks they are most likely to see, so that they can gameplan favorable plays.
BLITZ DIAGRAMS
Each week, I make a diagram of every blitz the opposing team has run throughout the season. It is organized by frequency, with the number of times it has been run labeled. These diagrams show our team a clear picture of what the blitz looks like so that they can visualize how their assignment may change when the blitz occurs, compared to facing a base defense.
SELF SCOUT
Each week, I prepare a scouting report of our own offense. This allows us to see the information that the opposing defense will have generated them for themselves. It will allow us to see our own tendencies, preventing us from being too predictable.
SITUATIONAL TENDENCIES
This chart is used to show our offensive tendencies by down and distance, personnel, and field position. It helps prevent us from being too heavy run or pass based on the game's situation or the personnel we have on the field. We consider anything over 70% to be a tendency, so anything reaching this threshold is highlighted green for run, or blue for pass.
FORMATION HIT CHART
This chart is made for every formation and backfield set we have ran throughout the season. It shows the run & pass percentage for each formation. Additionally, it separates the runs into which hole the play was designed to hit. It separates the passes into three step, play action, drop back, sprint out, naked, screens, and run-pass options. This allows the offense to know what their own tendencies are. It helps us to break our own tendencies so that the defense does not know what we are likely to do as soon as we line up in a certain formation
PASS ZONE HIT CHART
This chart shows the frequency that we throw the ball to each field zone, as well as our stats throwing the ball to each zone. There are two charts: the first is by direction (left / right), while the second is by strength (field / boundary). It shows us where we are having the most success throwing the ball. Additionally, it informs us where we need to improve, where we should attack more, and what areas of the field opposing defenses will be most concerned about covering.
